Planting Gardens

Our first week of Experience Curriculum Garden Treasures was all about the beginning of it all. You can’t have a garden if you don’t plant anything and there are certain things you need to grow plants. We learned all about Soil, Seeds, Sun & Water, Roots and Worms.

With our soil topic we did an Invitation to Create Soil Collage. We gave them thick paper, soil, sticks, grass and we found some flower pedals on the ground so we added those to the pile of items for them to choose from. We had a bag of potting soil since we’ve been gardening and transplanting things. The kids got a big kick out of gluing it to the paper but as you can see from the picture, some kids thought getting dirt and glue on their hands was a little weird. They did it anyway and the collages turned out great. We added a paper frame to the finished product. As with all of our crafts like this, they get to do it however they want. We give them some ideas if they seem to be a bit lost, but they get to make the decisions on how it turns out.

Another Invitation to Create was our Seed Mosaic. The kids got to work on their pincher skills to pick up these small seeds and their creativity on where to put them. The younger kids had glue already on their paper while the older kids got to put it on themselves. It took some time and held their attention.

When it was time to learn about Sun & Water, we planted some grass seeds in small cups. We decided the best thing to do was to put everyone in their own circle in the driveway. Then we went around with the bag of potting soil and let them fill their little cups. After everyone had soil, we passed around a bunch of grass seeds and had them poke it down into the dirt. We let the kids put a bit of water in their cup to moisten the soil before gathering them up to get some sunlight.

The next Invitation to Create was really fun for the kids. The older kids really grasp what to do while the younger ones just colored on the side. We helped some student with it so they could understand better. I loved seeing how each one turned out.

Probably the most fun they had this week was the Invitation to Create painting these worms. We gave them brown and orange paint and they could paint it however they wanted. This took some time because it was a large worm. We painting in groups since it was so big. The older kids did really well staying in the lines. I loved all of them. It took a bit to dry and I didn’t get a picture of all of the worms together. Stay tuned for more Garden Treasures!
