Large Sea Creatures

We got to make some really fun sea creatures this week. This helped the kids get a big more excited about the ocean, although we still have to listen to space songs after we finish our Experience Curriculum Ocean Dive lessons. This week we learned about Dolphins, Octopus, Whales, Sharks and Sea Turtles.

The Make & Play for our dolphins was a surprise for the kids. They got very excited at the finished product. We used a paper plate to create the sky. They glued the dolphin on the plate on top of the clouds. They drew waves on a blue paper and used a metal fastener to attach it to the plate. They spin the blue paper and watch the dolphin jump in and out of the water.

Their Octopus Make & Play was so easy! The kids decorated their paper and cut the arms apart following the lines. We glued fun eyes on and drew circles on the arms for suckers on them. We used yarn to make it hangable. We cured the legs to make them stand out instead of hang straight down. This was one of their favorite crafts.

This Make & Play was yet again another way of painting! We took a whale shaped paper and put drops of blue paint on the whale. The children used paper straws to blow the paint around on the whale. They had to learn to put their mouth over the straw and blow OUT and not IN. They learned that if they don’t put their mouth around the straw and get the air INTO the straw, it would NOT blow the paint anywhere. It was like a lightbulb came on when they finally figured out how to do it.

We made this Invitation to Create into a Make & Play by NOT gluing the shark down on top of the school of “fish” that they created out of the colored confetti. We used some green glitter glue and stuck the confetti around on the paper. Then they take the shark and swim him around the paper.

Using our cube, we put shapes in the slots and rolled the cube. The children drew the shape that it landed on. This was a fun chance for the kids to practice making different shapes. Most knew the names of them.

Sea turtles are my favorite. They are such beautiful creatures. This Invitation to Create they were given a gray piece of construction paper and a soufflé cup. We let them decorate the paper how they wanted and then drew a circle on the paper in the middle of their coloring. Then were able to cut out the shape with the head, legs and tail. We glued the cup to the paper and let it dry. They turned out really cute!

We purchased a new CD/cassette radio for the school room because our other one wasn’t working correctly. We also purchased some new quiet time CDs from Scripture Lullabies. We have loved their instrumental, soothing music for three years, when we found their company and the Lullaby Teddy Bears. My granddaughter’s favorite song right now is Bless The Lord and it is on the first volume.

That is a look at week two of Ocean Dive! What was YOUR favorite craft that we made this week? Check back for the next two weeks of ocean fun!
