Garden Plants and Weeds

We finished up our Garden Treasures unit with some really fun crafts and games. This one has been a fun unit to do during spring since so many things are blooming right now. We didn't get to get outside as much as we wanted since it has rained almost the entire month of May. We did learn about some of the animals that hang around gardens, like rabbits. They learned about how moles make tunnels underground and created a picture with brown rectangles as tunnels.

The kids learned about plant parts in a fun Invitation to Create activity. We made a flower with different supplies and let the kids glue labels on them. We took the plant part cards and put those in order before and after the craft.

A Make & Play craft one day was a flower headband. There were different options of how to put on the leaves but we let the kids choose how they wanted them. They colored their flowers whatever color they wanted.

Another Invitation to Create was about one of the children's favorite weeds, a dandelion. They used a pokey ball to paint with the make the impression of that type of flower. The kids always enjoy painting with different things other than a brush. They used white paint on blue paper. It turned the paint pink when it dried. We decided not to put the pipe cleaner as the stem because it didn't want to stick.

We added to our Make & Play for carrots by making the children their own paper grocery bag and some extra fruits and veggies. The kids got a big kick out of that. They used it to play framers market the rest of the week.

Their postcards for Garden Treasures turned out really colorful. Some just kept coloring until the entire side was filled with color.

Ms. Jenni created a fun game where the kids had to find the veggie that match an outline. Then they had to find the word on the paper and glue the matching veggie in the correct circle. I was so proud of the kids for doing it. Even the younger kids were able to find the matching word.

We watched so many wonderful videos and found some with kids a little older than them teaching them how to garden. They really connected and watched closer.

That is a wrap for May and Garden Treasures for our school. We are ready for our summer camp sessions.

Remember, There's Adventure Around Every Corner!
