Our School Library

Over the past 36 years, I have been collecting books for children of all ages. Our school library started out pretty small. A reading area was something I always wanted my students to have so I began making room in part of the room for some bookshelves, a rug and a big comfy pillow. As I got more book, I added more shelves. When I became a partner at PaperPie (formerly a booklady at UBAM), I was able to add so many MORE wonderful books to our school library.

I wanted to share pictures of it from the different angels and explain a bit about how it is set up. The bookshelves facing outward have baskets of books and hard back books in between the baskets for books that are too big to fit in the basket. These books are separated by theme. We have books for just about any theme you could come up with, some topics have a large amount of books.

The books along the top of this shelf are for our kinder and early elementary students. There are level readers and readers that go with their curriculum. Our blue basket is filled with our Dr. Seuss books. We have several stuffies near the basket that are for those books.

The bench contains baskets with our course books for handwriting, language arts and math. They are labeled with their names so the children can get them out and put them up when they are finished. The children can sit on the bench or they can sit on the floor to read. We have lots of stuffies in the library so they can hold one while they read, if they want.

I have one bookshelf to the left that has the baskets. MOST are filled with holiday books, but I have a few other themes in there. Some of our faith based books on that shelf. The middle has collections of hard backs, many from PaperPie, also some other publishers with series of books. This 9 cubbie shelf was perfect for these larger books. We chose to highlight space on the top because it is one of the kids favorite subjects and we have so many nice books to display.

Here you can see the full rug and big comfy pillow that I got years ago. It has held up through years of children enjoying our library. The rolling filing cart to the left of the library contains curriculum and other resources.

The books on these two shelves are mostly for the younger students, although any of the students can enjoy reading them. The book shelf on the right contains chapter books and level readers for our elementary students. There are some faith based books and our beginner and student bibles on the top of these shelves. The white basket is filled with small board books. That basket can be moved anywhere that a student needs something to occupy their attention for a short while.

We have some shelves in other rooms that hold more beginning readers, more advanced chapter books, school reference books, and other resources. We also have a reading nook that we call the "space library" because it has space stickers on the wall and pillows with space on them. If there is one thing the school uses daily and loves a whole lot, it is books!
